- In Washington, D.C., Ishmail "The Arsenal" Arvin (15-1-4, 7 KOs) upset Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson (23-3, 17 KOs) with a sixth-round TKO victory to claim the vacant USBO junior middleweight championship. After being dropped twice in the third round, Arvin would come back and ultimately be declared the victor due to a deep gash developing over Thompson's left eye.
- Also on the card, held at the Ibiza Nightclub, Ola "Kyptonite" Afolabi (13-1-3, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision over DeLeon Tinsley (9-4-1, 5 KOs) following eight rounds of action. Scores were 79-73, 78-74, 77-74. Meanwhile, Alexander "The Great" Johnson (6-0, 3 KOs) would remain undefeated, winning a fourth-round unanimous decision over Zeferino Albino (3-7-2, 1 KO) with scores of 40-35, 40-35, 40-36.
- At the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Il., fomer junior lightweight world champion Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez (43-7-1, 24 KOs) successfully returned from a two-year retirement. He won a split decision over Hector "The Mongoose" Alatorre (15-5, 4 KOs) after ten rounds. Scores were 97-93, 96-94 and 97-93.
- In other action from Chicago, Javier Castro (17-1, 15 KOs) knocked out Harrison Cuello (15-8-2, 11 KOs) at :47 into the third. And undefeated welterweight Ivan Popoca (8-0-1, 6 KOs) dropped Brian Carden (8-6, 7 KOs) twice in the first round, with a stoppage at 2:13 into the first.
- Both Joel Casamayor (36-3-1, 22 KOs) and Juan Manuel Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KOs) have arrived at their respective training camps to begin preparation for their Sept. 13 pay-per-show showdown. The event will promoted by Golden Boy and will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nv. Casamayor is training in Phoenix, Az. with Roger Bloodworth, while Marquez trains in Mexico City at Romanza Gym.
- Freddie Roach told DZSR Sports Radio that he would waive his training fees if Manny Pacquiao loses his proposed fight against Oscar De La Hoya, in a bid to put over his confidence in "Pacman".
- Also preparing for an upcoming fight, Ray Sanchez is in Las Vegas training for a matchup against Joaquin Zamora on Sept. 5. Also on the card, Urbano Antillon (23-0) meets Guadalupe Rosales (26-2) in a 12-round bout for the NABF, NABO super featherweight title, plus Demetrius Hopkins (28-0) makes his Top Rank debut against Joaquin Gallardo (18-7-2) in a 10-rounder.
- The ESPN2 fight card scheduled for Sept. 5 will feature a junior middleweight tilt featuring undefeated James Kirkland (22-0, 19 KOs) and Ricardo Cortes (22-2-1, 15 KOs).
- According to Team Salita, Andreas Kotelnik will defend his WBA super lightweight title against Dmitriy Salita on Nov. 8 at Madison Square Garden. The bout would be featured on the HBO pay-per-view broadcast as part of the undercard for the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Joe Calzaghe mega fight.
- Breidis Prescott (17-2, 14 KOs) will challenge top-ranked lightweight Amir Khan on Sept. 6 at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. Prescott is ranked fourteenth by the WBA, while Khan is a WBO #2, WBC #5 and IBF #10 lightweight force.
- Former undisputed world bantamweight champion Vic Toweel passed away in Sydney, Australia on Friday morning at the age of 80. Toweel competed in the 1948 Olympics before going pro and claiming a world title.
