- Undefeated WBO light flyweight champion Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon (31-0, 6 KOs) will headline "Latin Fury 6" on pay-per-view. His opponent is Hugo Cazares (26-4-1, 19 KOs). The event takes place on Aug. 30 at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
- InterBox President and former WBC super middleweight world champion Eric Lucas (38-7-3, 14 KOs) is considering a return to the ring, according to FightNews.com. After discussing the possibility of a return with business partner Jean Bedard and trainer Stephan Larouche, Lucas, 37, now plans to undergo medical testing and endure some sparring sessions to test his reflexes and physical capacities. No target date for a return has been set.
- At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, only one U.S. boxer has qualified to the medal rounds. Demetrius Andrade, a heavy favorite, has been eliminated from the competition following an 11-9 loss to Jung Joo Kim of Korea. Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder, a far less experienced boxer, has advanced to the semifinals by way of tiebreaker following a 10-10 draw with Moroccan Mohammed Arjaoui.
- Zeferino Entertainment has announced a blockbuster fight card that will feature undefeated welterweight Marvin Cordova (19-0-1, 11 KOs) take on Derrick Samuels (15-3-1, 4 KOs), plus super middleweight Carlos De Leon Jr. (20-2-2, 13 KOs) against Dhafir Smith (20-18-6, 4 KOs). The card will also feature a six-round cruiserweight bout between Aaron Williams (17-1-1, 12 KOs) and Zack Page (15-20-2, 5 KOs).
- Don King met wIth the Mayor of Chengdu Friday during a tour of China. King is promoting a boxing event in Chengdu scheduled to take place on Nov. 7 at the Sichuan Gymnasium Arena. The world-famous boxing promoter returns to his office in Florida today.
- Tickets go on sale tomorrow at the Garden Box Office for Roy Jones Jr. vs. Joe Calzaghe, set to take place Nov. 8 at the infamous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tickets prices include $150, $250, $500, $750, $1000 and $1500.
- Team Salita has announced that Dmitiy Salita will challenge WBA super lightweight champion Andreas Kotelnik for the title on the undercard of Jones vs. Calzaghe at Madison Square Garden. The bout is subject to Kotelnik's title defense on Sept. 13 against Norio Kimiura in Ukraine.
- Unbeaten junior middleweight James Kirkland defends the gold against Ricardo Torres on the ESPN2 fight card scheduled for Sept. 5. Tough no venue has been confirmed, the bout will likely take place in Texas.
- Ghana's Kong Agbeko defends the IBF bantamweight crown against number-one contender William Gonzalez on Sept. 13 in Biloxi, Mississippi.
- FightNews.com is reporting that the camp of IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. has denied reports that they are set to relinquish their crown and disregard their mandatory title defense. Nonito Sr., the champion's father and trainer, said his son has been aching to see action as he's been inactive since his only title defense last December against Mexican Luis Maldonado. Donaire is mandated to defend the 112-pound IBF title against challenger Moruti Mthalane of South Africa. The challenger's well-known promoter, Branco Milenkovic, is reportedly bent on bringing the fight in their territory via purse bid.
- "Prize Fight Entertainment" held their first show in Kumasi, Ghana on Saturday - "Rumble in the Garden City" - in which 6,000 people packed the outdoor Baba Yara Stadium. In the main event, Kofi Jantuah (32-3-1, 21 KOs) defeated Ricardo Manuel Genero (13-7-3, 6 KOs) following four rounds of action. Jantuah his sights set on the vacant IBF intercontinental title. Also at "Rumble in the Garden City," James Obede Toney (23-3-1) won a decision against Adjin Tetteh, while Charles Adamu (16-3) vanquished Mohammed Barneyi.
- Undefeated Nathan Cleverley will challenge Dean Francis for the British light heavyweight title on Oct. 10 at Everton Park Sports Center in Liverpool, England.
- At a boxing event in Monteria, Colombia on Saturday, Fulgencio Zuniga (21-2-1, 18 KOs) defeated Elias Ruiz (7-13, 5 KOs) with a stoppage at 2:20 in the second frame. The super middleweight matchup was scheduled for ten rounds. Zuniga's opponent was initially Canadian prospect Jean Pascal. However, Pascal withdrew from the bout twice and Ruiz stepped in as a replacement.
- Also on Saturday, South African champions Daniel Bruwer (21-1-1, 17 KOs) and Simphiwe Vetyeka (20-1, 11 KOs) were victorious, retaining their light heavyweight and bantamweight titles, respectively. The event took place at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.
- Over in Tokyo, Japan, OPBF flyweight titleholder Masafumi Okubo (13-2-1, 4 KOs) fought Yasuto Aritomi (14-1-1 5 KOs) to a technical draw. The fight was stopped due to blood after a head collission at 0:50 in Saturday's bout. Okubo barely retained his title with scores of 20-18, 20-19 and 19-19.
- Heavyweight champion Andrew Golota has agreed to participate in Don King's Chengdu, China charity event. Though no opponent has been named, King has hinted at matching him up against Jameel McCline or Shannon Briggs.
- Undefeated 20-year-old junior middleweight prospect Ronney Vargas (8-0, 6 KOs) was shot to death in his car on Saturday morning in the Bronx. The shooting reportedly occurred after Vargas got into an argument at a local deli. Vargas passed away at St. Barnabas Hospital. No arrests have been made.
- Bob Gilson, a New York boxing judge, passed away suddenly on Aug. 15 in Nassau County, New York. Gilson was a longtime official in New York and judged many world title fights for the World Boxing Union.
- Showtime will be airing the super middleweight title fight between undefeated titleholder Lucian Bute and mandatory challenger Librado Andrade on Oct. 24. The event emanates from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
