- In a shocking event at the Beijing Olympics, Tajikstan's Dzhakhon Kurbanov got disqualified from the light heavyweight quarterfinals for biting his Kazakh opponent, Yerkebulan Shynalyev, on the shoulder. Only 17 seconds remained in the third round. Mike Tyson anyone?
- In the light flyweight quarterfinals of Olympic action from Beijing, Ireland's Paddy Barnes bested Poland's Lukasz Maszczyk; Birzhan Zhakypov, of Kazakhstan, conquered Shiming Zou, of China; Thailand's Amnat Ruenroeng defeated Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorg; and Cuban Yampier Hernandez was victorious over Brazilian Paulo Carvalho.
- In lightweight action, Korea's Jongsub Baik beat Armenian Hrachik Javakhysan; Colombia's Darleys Perez defeated Russian Alexey Tischenko; Cuba's Yordenis Ugas bested Romanian Georgean Propescu; and Daouda Sow, of France, beat Chinese Qing Hu.
- Finally, in the light heavyweight quarterfinals, Britain's Tony Jeffries bested Hungary's Imre Szello; Brazilian Washington Silva beat Ireland's Kenny Egan; and China's Xiaoping Zhang defeated Algier's Abdelhafid Benchabla. Shynalyev advanced over Kurbanov for the bite incident.
- The flyweight and middleweight Olympic quarterfinals will be contested tomorrow in Beijing.
- Former IBF super flyweight kingpin Felix Machado (25-9-1, 12 KOs), of Venezuela, is giving up boxing after suffering four consecutive losses. The 35-year-old veteran made the decision to call the quits following a two-round knockout to Herman Isalva (9-3, 5 KOs) last Satuday.
- At the MGM in Las Vegas, Top Rank official Bob Arum said discussions are ongoing for a matchup between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, tentatively for Dec. 6 at the same venue in Vegas.
- Undisputed welterweight champion Holly Holm (22-1-2, 6 KOs) is officially scheduled for a rematch against former titleholder Mary Jo Sanders (25-1, 8 KOs) on Oct. 17 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit. Sanders' only professional loss is against Holm, who won the title with scores of 97-93, 98-92 and 98-92
- Bredis Prescott (19-0, 17 KOs) will challenge Amir Khan (18-0, 14 KOs) for the WBO Intercontinental lightweight crown in a battle of undefeated up-and-comers. The fight is scheduled for Sept. 6 at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England.
- FightNews.com is reporting that talk has already started for a fight between Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton next summer. Wembley Stadium, with a 100,000 person capacity, has been brought up as a possible venue.
- It is also reporting that Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles could be the venue for a rematch between Antonio Margarito and Joshua Clottey, with a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (37-0, 29 KOs) vs. Matt Vanda (38-7, 21 KOs) rematch as the co-featured bout.
- Daniel Jimenez (17-3-1, 10 KOs) meets Shamir Reyes (18-5-2, 7 KOs) Friday at the Pounce Hilton & Casino Resort in Ponce, PR. It airs on a Telefutura Solo Boexo show. Irving Garcia (16-3-2, 8 KOs) faces Hector Munoz (18-1, 11 KOs) in the co-featured bout.
- "Latin Fury 6" takes place next Saturday on pay-per-view with Ivan Calderon (31-0, 6 KOs) taking on Hugo Cazares (26-4-1, 19 KOs) for the WBO junior flyweight title in the main event. In other title bouts, Puerto Rican Roman Martinez (19-0-1) meets Nicaraguan Santos Benavides (14-1-1, 12 KOs) for the NABO junior featherweight crown, Puerto Rican Eric Morel (38-2, 20 KOs) meets Mexican Heriberto Ruiz (39-6-2, 23 KOs) for NABO bantamweight gold, and Puerto Rican welterweights Euri Gonzalez (16-0-1, 11 KOs) and Edwin Vazquez (22-12-2, 8 KOs) clash for the NABO Latino welterweight title.
- FightNews.com is reporting that WBC #6 middleweight Miguel Espino (19-2-1, 8 KOs) headlines "American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank," scheduled for Sept. 11 in San Jose, Calif. at the HP Pavilion, against a yet-to-be-named opponent. The co-featured bout pits junior middleweight Francisco Santana (9-1, 5 KOs) against Antonio Johnson (7-0, 3 KOs).
- Oscar Diaz is still in critical condition after collapsing in the ring between rounds due to bleeding in his brain during a pummeling sustained against Delvin Rodriguez on July 16, according to FightNews.com. After undergoing a surgery on his brain in which a part of his cranium was removed to reduce swelling, it is presently unknown if he will make a recovery. According to doctors, it is too early to tell.
- Joe Calzaghe's attorneys have filed a high court counterclaim to Frank Warren and his Sport Network's case against the unbeaten champ. After ending a 12-year association with Warren and Sports Network in June, Calzaghe was sued for breaking a verbal contract for rights to promote future fights. Calzaghe's countersuit denies Warren's claims and alleges that he is owed at least $4.5 million for his victory over Bernard Hopkins in April.
- According to BoxingScene.com, Wladimir Klitschko, current IBF & WBO heavyweight champion, is negotiating with undefeated WBO mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin, and a deal could be sealed within a week.
- Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton is promoting his first boxing event set for Sept. 4 in Birmingham, England, only two months off from his matchup with Paulie Malignaggi on Nov. 22. In addition to training and promoting, Hatton plans to set up his own line of clothing and boxing equipment.
- The Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee is host to a vacant IBF featherweight title fight between South African Taklalani Ndlovu and Mexican Fernando Beltran. The bout would air on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights.
- Top Rank is promoting a Sept. 5 fight card to be televised on Telefutura in which undefeated Mario Antillon will take on returning Daniel Attah, who has not seen action since March 2007. The card will emanate from the Isleta Casino in Albuquerque, NM. Antillon's original opponent was Guadalupe Rosales.
- According to FightNews.com, former IBF 140-pound champion Lovemore Ndou has challenged former WBA 168-pound titleholder Anthony Mundine to a ten-round bout at a catch weight of 160 pounds.
- Featherweight Derry Mathews of Liverpool has signed a three-year contract with heavyweight David Hayes' Hayemaker Promotions. His first fight under Hayemaker Promotions will see him compete in a final eliminator for the British title against unbeaten Martin Lindsay. The bout is set for Sept. 20 in Sheffield, England.
