- The middleweight quarterfinals took place today at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Ireland's Darren John Sutherland dominated Venezuela's Alfonso Blanco Parra with an 11-1 score; James Degale, of Great Britian, bested Bakhityar Artayev, of Kazakhstan, with an 8-3 score; Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux beat Uzbek Elshod Rasulov with a 9-7 score; and India's Vijender Kumar earned a 9-4 score, edging out Ecaudor's Carlos Gongora.
- In today's Olympic flyweight quartfinals, Russian Georgy Balakshin beat Indian Jitendar Kumar with a 15-11 score; Italian Vicenzo Picardi defeated Tunisian Walid Cherif with a 7-5 score; while Thai boxer Somjit Jonjohor toppled Tajikstan's Anvar Yunosov with an 8-1 score.
- Olympic Semifinals, featuring eight Cuban boxers, for all weight divisions begin tomorrow in Beijing.
- Undefeated female prospect Maureen Shea (12-0, 6 KOs) will headline an Irish Ropes Promotions event in September. No opponent has been announced. Pasquel Rouse (19-3-3, 11 KOs), Bryant Pappas (6-0, 6 KOs), Eylon Kedem (6-1-3, 4 KOs), Jose Espinal (4-3-1, 1 KO) and Eddie Irizarry (2-0, 1 KO) are also confirmed to compete on the Sept. 10 fight card, emanating from the PAL Gym in Yonkers, N.Y.
- This Friday's ESPN2 fight card takes place in Nashville, Tenn., the first boxing card there in 11 years. Fernardo Beltran Jr. (30-3-1, 18 KOs), of Mexico, meets Takalani Ndlovu (28-4, 18 KOs) for IBO featherweight gold.
- Also on Friday, the WBF featherweight championship is up for grabs as South Africa's undefeated sensation Ludumo Galada (11-0, 4 KOs) meets Kenya's David Kiilu (28-8-2, 15 KOs) at the Orient Theatre in East London, Eastern Cape of South Africa. The title is currently vacant.
- Welterweights Ray Robinson (8-0, 3 KOs) and. Eberto Medina (5-3, 1 KO) clash in a six-round affair, heavyweights Terrell Nelson (8-5, 5 KOs) and Bernard Brown (5-4-2, 3 KOs) meet, plus Terrell Qu'id Muhammad (2-0, 2 KOs) will take on a yet-to-be-determined opponent, all on the undercard of the Sept. 5 Star Boxing card from the Bally's Hotel & Casino in Alantic City. "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (19-2-2, 9 KOs) and Nasser Athumani (20-6, 16 KOs) meet in the first of a doubleheader main event. In the co-featured matchup, Kevin Johnson (19-0-1, 6 KOs) collides with Bruce Seldon (38-6, 34 KOs).
- IBF, WBO & WBA lightweight titleholder Nate Campbell (35-5-1, 25 KOs) and Joan Guzman (28-0) have exchanged disagreeable words heading into their Don King Productions & One Punch Productions promoted fight card on Sept. 13. The bout will take be broadcast live on Showtime in the U.S. at 9 p.m. ET.
- Gossen Tutor Promotions has inked junior welterweight Michael Dallas Jr. (4-0) of Bakersfied, Calif. Dallas compiled a 115-12 record as an amateur.
- Heavyweight "Tiger" Ted Lowry, of New Haven, CT., will be inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame. He has 141 fights to his credit and is often looked back on for a disputed split decision loss to Rocky Marciano.
- The 87th Annual Convention for the WBA (World Boxing Association) takes place Sept. 29 to Oct. 4 at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Hotel in Punta Canada, Dominican Republic.
- In a sudden change, undefeated WBC youth featherweight titleholder Matt Remillard (14-0, 7 KOs) will now take on Atlanta-native Antonio Davis (26-4, 13 KOs) in the co-featured bout of the Aug. 29 ESPN2 televised card. Remillard was originally set to face Adalberto Borquez (18-6, 17 KO), though the bout has now been scrapped. The ESPN2 special emanates from the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT.
