- Here are the latest semifinal results from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing:
* At flyweight, Cuba's Laffita Hernandez defeated Russia's Georgy Balakshin with a 9-8 score, while Thai Somjit Jongjohor bested Italian Vicenzo Picardi 7-1.
* At featherweight, Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko beat Turkey's Yakup Kilic 10-1, while Khedafi Djelkhir, of France, finished Azerbaijani Shanin Imranov after two rounds of action.
* At light welterweight, Dominican Felix Diaz edged out France's Alexis Vastine 6-1, while Thailand's Manus Boonjumnong defeated Cuban Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo 10-5.
* At middleweight, Emilio Correa Bayeaux, of Cuba, topped India's Vijender Kumar 8-5, while Great Britain's James Degale scored a 10-3 victory over Irish Darren John Sutherland.
* In the heavyweight division, Russia's Rakhim Chakhkiev trounced Cuba's Osmai Acosta Duarte with a 10-5 score, while Italian Clemente Russo beat American boxer Deontay Wilder 7-1.
* Moving down the scales to light flyweight, Shiming Zou, of China, shut out Irish Paddy Barnes with a 15-0 score, while Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorj surprised Cuban Yampier Hernandez 8-8.
* At bantamweight, Badar-Uugan Enkhbat, of Mongolia, defeated Moldova's Veaceslav Gojan with a 15-2 score, while Cuba's Yankiel Leon Alarcon bested Bruno Julie, of Mauritius, 7-5.
* In lightweight warfare, France's Daouda Sow beat Cuban Yordenis Ugas 15-8, while Russia's Alexey Tishchenko conquered Armenia's Hrachik Javakhyan 10-5.
* At welterweight, Kazakh Bakhyt Sarsekbayev beat Korea's Jungjoo Kim with a 10-6 score, while Cuba's Carlos Banteaux Suarez crushed China's Silamu Hanati 17-4.
* In the light heavyweight division, Xiaoping Zhang, of China, tied Kazakh Yerkebulan Shynaliyev 4-4, ultimately winning on points, while Irish Kenny Egan scored 10-3 over British boxer Tony Jeffries.
* Finally, at super heavyweight, Italy's Roberto Cammarelle defeat Great Britain's David Prince by TKO after two rounds of action, while China's Zhilei Zhang walked through Ukrainian Vyacheslav Glazkov.
- The finals for Olympic boxing begin on Saturday with the following divisions: flyweight, featherweight, light welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight.
- Televised boxing returns to Nashville, Tennessee tonight for ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. In the main event, featherweights Fernando Beltran Jr. and Takalani Ndlovu face off. Beltran Jr. had his winning streak snapped in April when he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to undefeated super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor. Ndlovu has also been victimized by "The Canadian Kid," suffering his first stoppage loss in July 2007. The card will emanate from the Sommet Center in Nashville.
- Telefutura tonight will feature a Top Rank & Miguel Cotto Productions boxing event, hosted at the Ballroom at the Ponce Hilton Hotel & Resort in Puerto Rico. Daniel Jimenez takes on Shamir Reyes in the featured bout. Jiminez weighed in at 134.6 pounds, while Reyes checked in at 138.2.
- Oscar De La Hoya has offered Manny Pacquiao a 67-33 purse split in order to make the dream matchup happen in October, according to FightNews.com. Talks have been on and off in the past few weeks as De La Hoya remained firm in giving Pacquiao only 30 per cent, while the Filipino champion has been unyielding in asking for a 40 per cent share of the total revenue.
- Las Vegas-native Kid Diamond headlines a Top Rank Telefutura-televised fight card on Sept. 19. His opponent is Javier Jauregui. The card has landed at the Buffalo Bills' Star Arena in Primm, Nev.
- Former IBF 154-pound titleholder Roman Karmazin will make his return on Sept. 27 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Returning from a devastating loss to Congolese Alex Bunema this past January, Karmazin, who is ranked 11th by the IBF, will appear on the undercard of the Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga showdown. The fight will be contested at the middleweight limit. An opponent has yet-to-be-named.
- Dibella Entertainment has inked top amateur heavyweight Tor Hamer, who will make his professional debut Oct. 22 on a Diabella Broadway Boxing card. The 6'2", 235-pound Hamer is ranked first at super heavyweight by USA boxing. As an amateur, he acquired a 34-1 record.
- Female flyweight titleholder Susi Kentikian defends the title against Hagar Shmoulefeld tonight in Dusseldorf.
- Boxing promoter Chris Webb, who staged the 2004 Mike Tyson return bout in Louisville, KY., pled guilty to a tax charge yesterday. Webb allegedly failed to report over $1 million in income between 2000 and 2001.
- Manuel Quezada (24-4, 15 KOs) defeated Andrew Greeley (14-23-2, 8 KOs) by unanimous decision last night at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, Calif. The heavyweight bout was contested over ten rounds. Scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 97-93. The co-featured bout saw Carino Moreno (19-1, 5 KOs) edge out Puerto Rican Yahaira Martinez (7-3) by unanimous decision. Scores were equally lopsided - 100-90, 100-90, 97-93.
- Russian heavyweight sensation Nikolai "The Russian Giant" Valuev turned 35 yesterday.
