Tonight's WWE Superstars opens with that kickin' theme song & lots of pyro!
|Match 1 - Santino Marella vs. "The" Brian Kendrick
Crowd is already chanting "Santino!" Brian Kendrick starts with kick and an elbow throwing Santino to the mat. SM gets to his feet, rolls BK off, takes him down to the mat with a headlock. Both wrestlers get to their feet, while Kendrick gets a foot on the ropes to break it up. Kendrick tries for a kick but Santino catches it. SM throws some lefts then BK sneaks a knee to the stomach. With SM down on the mat, BK does some damage to SM's right leg with a few driving kicks. For some reason Kendrick just starts slapping Marella & calling him a loser which kind of "wakes him up" and he really gets going! Santino delivers a hip toss and Kendrick is in the corner. SM walks over and gives a sharp boot to the face. BK goes for a cover and SM grabs the bottom rope. SM reverses another pin attempt by BK and rolls him up, giving Santino Marella the pin! Santino celebrates by going over to shake hands with the announcers. I don't know whether to feel happy for Marella or sad for Kendrick. Well done but a very short amount of action, so I'll say the match was a 2 out of 5. Winner:Santino Marella.
Match 2 - Charlie Haas vs. John Morrison
Back from commercial now,
with Haas already in the ring. John Morrison walks to the ring with one of the
better entrances in WWE. We go to a clip of Morrison's match last week when he
defeated CM Punk. Haas & Morrison begin the match by locking up; referee
breaks them up at the ropes; then Haas sneaks an elbow to the face of Morrison.
Haas throws Morrison off the ropes, JM slides under and gives H a couple of arm
drags & kicks him out of the ring. JM then dives thru the ropes & tries
to take CH back up the stairs into the ring; CH trips up JM who lands on the
steps! Haas picks up Morrison and puts him back into the ring. CH gives two kicks to the ribs, goes for a
pin, and JM kicks out at 2. M starts building momentum with his own kinks to
the ribs of H followed by a clothesline, followed by a leaping drop kick. Then,
M goes for a pin and H kicks out at 2. As Haas tries to come back, Morrison
catches him with a neckbreaker and quickly follows with his finisher, "The
Starship Pain!" It's 1-2-3 and the
winner is John Morrison. Good match
that I wish could have gone longer so, I'd say it's a 3 ½ out of 5.
(Here, we take a quick look
backstage where Zack Ryder of ECW is putting on "the sunglasses" & getting
psyched up for the next match. Then we come back from commercial with...)
Match 3 - Zack Ryder vs. Tyler Reks
The match begins with both
wrestlers tying up, goes into a corner where the ref breaks them up. On the
breakup, Ryder gives his signature "Ooh-Woo-Woo." Reks catches Ryder off the
ropes, lifts him up, and drops him face first. Reks goes for a pin, Zack kicks
out at 1. Reks goes to the ropes to grab Ryder; Ryder drops to the floor,
snapping Reks across the top rope. Ryder puts Reks in the corner & stomps
away on him! Ryder puts Reks in a headlock on the mat, both start to get up, Reks
elbows Ryder in the stomach. Reks flips over Ryder and applies a neckbreaker.
Reks puts together a series of fast moves, goes for the 3, Ryder kicks out at
2. TR tries to go up to the top rope, ZR gets up & kicks him in the back of
the leg, making Tyler hit the mat with the back of his head! Ryder picks up Reks & applies the "Zack
Attack" & gets the pin on Tyler Reks - giving the win to Zack Ryder. This match was a lot like the 2nd
match in that there was good offense by both wrestlers...again, good match that
was just not long enough. We'll rate this one a 3 ½ out of 5.
There's a promo for the
public service that WWE is promoting - called "Summer Slam Reading Jam." Then,
a review of Monday's RAW & the CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy match last Sunday at
The Bash which leads to:
Match 4 - CM Punk vs. Edge
CM Punk begins with some hard kicks to Edge, throws Edge off the ropes & gives a knee to the midsection. Punk goes for a cover but Edge kicks out at 1.
Punk then takes Edge down with the leg scissors. CM Punk dominates at the start! Edge finally gets in some good punches, he charges at Punk who's near the ropes; Punk flips him over the top rope, putting Edge on the apron. Punk kicks the legs out from under Edge & ends up on the outside of the ring on the floor. CM Punk rolls Edge back into the ring, Punk charges to Edge who's now in the corner. Edge puts up a boot - knocking down Punk. Punk's eye starts bothering him - as they break for commercial. Coming back, Edge puts the beat down on Punk. Edge walks toward Punk who gets up to give the big kicks to the legs of Edge. CM tries to throw Edge off the ropes but Edge reverses it, lifting Punk off the ropes throwing him down to the mat chest first. Edge has Punk down on the mat, Punk rises up, giving an elbow punch followed by a back kick. He throws Edge off the rope, catching him with a drop kick, then a kick to the back of the head & goes for a pin but, Edge kicks out at 2. CM Punk tries to apply a move but is countered by Edge who turns it into a DDT! Edge sets up for his finisher, "The Spear" as Punk slowly gets up. Edge charges, CM catches Edge & turns it into a swinging neckbreaker. Punk goes for another pin, Edge kicks out at 2. Edge goes to the outside to the top rope, leaps at Edge who ducks out of the way, Edge charges, Punk catches him in a quick slam, goes for the pin - Edge again up at 2! Both wrestlers are stumbling to get up, CM Punk charges at Edge in the corner; hitting Edge with a high knee, tries to follow with a GTS. Edge rakes the eyes taking advantage of the eye injury. Punk goes into the corner saying his eye is reinjured. Ref stops the match giving the win by disqualification to Edge and CM Punk remains the champion. Josh Matthews interviews Punk in the ring and Punk says "his eye is too injured, saying he can't see well enough to finish the match." He says he's happy to give Edge a rematch, but some in the crowd were not convinced. Again, very good match by these two. I'll say 4 out of 5.
Entire Show tonight: 3 ½ out of 5.
